Agape Founder, Kevin O’Brien, began dreaming big as a teenager. Growing up, both Kevin’s grandfather and uncle were carpenters. During high school, Kevin’s grandfather volunteered to finish his parents’ basement. Kevin was so excited to help, would rush home after basketball practice to work with his grandfather finishing the basement. A love of carpentry was born! During that project, Kevin even went to so far as to write on a stud in his parents’ basement, “I want to be a contractor someday…” and dated it “November 1969”.
After high school, Kevin studied Civil Engineering in college. He wanted to be a contractor, and Civil Engineering was the closest degree program offered. After graduating, he got engaged to his wife, Amy, and was introduced to a group of businessmen who were devout Christians. He was inspired by their enthusiasm for Christianity and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior, dedicating himself to doing his best work as a carpenter.
Fast forward a few years, he and Amy are married with a young family. Kevin was working as a carpenter, but there simply wasn’t enough work. He found himself unemployed, with a family to provide for. Kevin’s faith remained strong, and he took inspiration in a Bible verse, Psalms 37:4 that reads “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desire of your heart.”
True to the verse, shortly after finding himself unemployed, Kevin received a phone call about a large renovation project! He was hired as a contractor for the project. When asked who to make the check out to, he paused and said, “Make it out to Agape Construction!” He had just heard a sermon about Agape love and was inspired.
Agape Construction was founded in 1985, and Kevin was the sole employee! From these humble roots in Kevin’s basement, the company has grown significantly. Agape Construction is now a Design Build Firm with a team of over 50 professionals, including licensed interior designers, carpenters, architects, and a professional engineer (Kevin). We have two locations to better serve our clients with showrooms in Kirkwood and Chesterfield! The company has grown while staying true to our roots. “Agape” is a Greek word for love – the type of love that is selfless and caring for others. Agape’s team treats every project as if it were their own home, providing genuine compassion and care for the client.
