First, you should consider what materials you want to use for your deck. Have your heart set on a wooden deck? Let’s look at the pros and cons. A wooden deck could consist of hardwood, softwood, or pressure treated wood. Any of the three will give you that natural wood beauty and grain, however hardwood is the most durable and resistant to rot and decay. A solid hardwood deck can last for decades with proper maintenance, but it is going to be the most expensive. Also, hardwood trees take longer to grow, and not all hardwood is sustainably sourced. Softwood is more budget-friendly, light weight, and easy to install. But it is more susceptible to scratches, dents, rot and decay. Pressure treated wood is the most affordable option, but it deteriorates quickly. Any wood deck will need regular maintenance, with pressure treated wood needing maintenance most often.

If you want to enjoy your deck and not worry about much maintenance, you should consider a composite or PVC deck. Composite is a blend of plastic and wood fibers that creates a wood-like look whereas PVC is 100% plastic. Building costs on both will be more than wood, however both require very little maintenance and will last longer, offering savings over time.

Depending on your desired aesthetic, composite looks more natural, like wood. It will warm quickly on hot summer days and retain that heat, potentially becoming uncomfortable to walk on. PVC stays cooler, is more resistant to fading, but will have a more uniform appearance.
